Safewords Explained: How to Choose and Use One
A safeword is a simple, powerful tool: a word or signal that means stop, immediately, no questions asked. It lets people enjoy intense play knowing there is always a clear off switch. Here is how safewords work and how to set one up.
Why not just say stop?
Sometimes play involves words like no or stop as part of the scene itself. A dedicated safeword removes any confusion, it is a word you would never normally use, so when it is said, everyone knows it is real.
Choosing a good one
Pick something clear, memorable, and out of place, like a fruit or a color. Avoid words that might come up naturally in the moment. Both partners should agree on it and be able to recall it easily under pressure.
The traffic-light system
A popular approach uses three words. Green means keep going, yellow means ease up or check in, and red means stop now. It gives you a way to adjust intensity without ending everything at once.
When you cannot speak
If talking is not possible, agree on a non-verbal safe signal instead, dropping a held object, tapping three times, or a specific gesture. The signal matters more than the method.
