How to Negotiate a Scene Before You Play

The best scenes are not improvised from nothing, they start with a short, honest conversation. Negotiation is where partners align on what they want, what they do not, and how to keep things safe. Done right, it builds anticipation instead of killing it.

Share what you are into

Start with desires. What draws you in? What role do you want to play? Being specific helps your partner meet you where you are, and often reveals shared interests you did not expect.

Set your limits

Limits come in two kinds. Hard limits are firm nos that will not be crossed. Soft limits are maybes, things you are unsure about or might try under the right conditions. Name both clearly.

Agree on a safeword

Before anything begins, settle on a safeword or stop signal. This is the single most important part of the conversation, and it takes about ten seconds.

Talk about tone

Do you want something playful and light, or slow and intense? Aligning on tone up front means you are both telling the same story once the scene starts.

Check in during and after

Negotiation does not end when play begins. Check in along the way, and talk afterward about what worked and what did not. That feedback makes the next time even better.

Keep it low pressure

Negotiation is not a contract or a test. It is two people getting on the same page. If a match is not right, that is fine, thank them and move on.
